We don't switch anything off the moment your balance reaches zero. Here's the timeline:
Your balance runs out. Your servers keep running and keep accruing charges, so your balance goes below zero. We email the account owner, and the Dashboard shows Your balance ran out with a countdown. You can't deploy new servers until you add funds.
One week left: we email a reminder.
The day before suspension: we send a final notice.
After 14 days: your servers are suspended and powered off. Their data is kept, but they're still charged, because the hardware is still reserved for you. Load balancers, reserved IPs, snapshots and NAT gateways are marked suspended.
A week before removal: we email a warning.
30 days after suspension: suspended servers are destroyed for good, and their data can't be recovered.
Getting things back
Add funds at any point. Once your balance is above zero, suspended servers are restored automatically within about an hour.
Avoiding it
Turn on Auto top-up, and set a Low-balance alert.
Shared hosting and domains aren't affected by this timeline. They have their own renewal rules (see Hosting renewals and failed payments and Domain renewals and expiry).
